The latest news from Dubois, the Longhorn, and Art and Charlotte;
|
Fall is here in Dubois, Wyoming, and it is one of the nicest times of the year here. We're busy with the various projects of the Longhorn RV and Motel still, but are trying to take time to enjoy the beautiful place we live in.
We're busy winterizing things and trying to organize for winter. We wish the fall colors would last forever. Against the red hills, these orange and yellow leaves are simply beautiful. Our current RV and motel guests love it.
.
The mule deer have come and gone all winter and we currently have quite a few on the grounds again. They were hard on our new Aspen trees, with the bucks rubbing their antlers on them until they strip the bark off. We will have some to replace this spring.
| | | Cape Buffalo in Tanzania 2007 |
Here's a photo taken last August during our safari in Tanzania, Africa. There wasn't much cover for a stalk and we got 'caught' on this one. The common reaction for buffalo is to square off and face whatever scared them. Earlier in the year this grass would have been 8' tall, but there isn't enough left in August to hide either us or the buffalo.
Cape Buffalo are usually hunted in thick, heavy brush. It's dicey, dangerous business following the tracks of one or two old ninja bulls until either they notice you or you see them. There is no other hunting like this, and here in Masailand of Tanzania are the biggest and nastiest buffalo in Africa.

Close friends Dave and Linda Petersen joined us in Sonora, Mexico this January for a few days of dove, duck, and goose hunting with our long time outfitter friend, Sergio. These are Sea Brandt that we hunted right in the surf of the Sea of Cortez. It was tremendous shooting and sunny and warm. Sonora winters a ton of waterfowl and doves. We usually hunt desert mule deer here, but took time this year to do some bird hunting. I think this will become a yearly trip for January.
This is the Grizzly Cub, a custom built, experimental Super Cub that we've been building for two years. It's finally done and we'll soon have it here in Wyoming. First it goes to Sun 'n Fun in Florida for the show.
Everything on the aircraft is new, starting from scratch with a new airframe. We made it an experimental so we weren't limited on engines, propellers, etc.. We'll have more on it after the show as it's still an industry 'surprise' until shown.
Very high performance, it is built using all the best performing modifications developed over the years in Alaska bush flying. While it isn't as light as it could have been, it still will perform well with take-off distance around 100-150' and landing around 150-200'. It is a unique combination of components never assembled together in one aircraft before. Look for more on it soon.
